AXIS Foilboard Guide: Which Board is Right for Your Discipline?
Choosing a foil board is more confusing than choosing a wing or a mast – because the board has to do two completely different jobs: get you going on the water, and then stay out of the way once you are flying. The right board depends almost entirely on your discipline and how much volume you need to start. This guide walks through every board line in the AXIS foilboard range so you can find the right match for your riding.
The single most important number: volume
Volume (litres) determines how easily a board floats you before takeoff. As a starting rule: wing foilers typically want a board 20–40 L above their body weight in kilograms for learning, dropping toward body weight or below as skills improve. Prone, pump and dock start disciplines work with far less volume because the rider generates their own speed. Downwind SUP foiling needs long, narrow boards with 100–150 L for paddling efficiency in open water.
AXIS Froth – the best all-round wing foil board
The Froth is AXIS’s answer to the question “which board works for everything?”. Short and wide with generous volume packed into a compact outline, it reduces swing weight in the air while still offering a stable platform for takeoff. The latest design removed the angled chisel tail to lengthen the planing surface – a response to modern high-aspect wings that need more speed to lift. Available from 135 L down, the Froth suits wing foilers from 60 kg beginners to heavier riders wanting an easy session board. Starting from €1,612.
AXIS Tray V4 Carbon – the kite-to-everything crossover
Originally designed as the ultimate kite foilboard, the Tray V4 Carbon (now evolved to the Tray V5) earned a second life in pump, dock start and wake foiling because of its super-thin 20 mm profile and narrow tail. The widest point sits further forward for balanced foot pressure, while the narrower tail prevents catching during hard carves. At just 110 L in the smallest size, it suits lighter and more experienced riders. From €989.
AXIS Blast Carbon – fast and narrow for wing racing
The Blast Carbon is built for speed. Narrow outlines and longer lengths get you onto foil quickly and carve tightly into swell faces. Full carbon construction with PVC top and bottom keeps weight down, and the updated deck pad with raised rails and grooves clears water faster for grip when you need it. AXIS’s racing crew runs the smaller Blast sizes for their efficiency upwind. If you are chasing performance wing foiling rather than casual sessions, start here. From €1,449.
AXIS Frank Dart – compact SUP for waves and downwind
Designed by Francesco Maffei (Frank Foilboards), the Frank Dart targets riders who want a short, playful SUP that works across conditions. The rocker line and bottom contours accelerate the board quickly for easy takeoff despite the compact dimensions, and the design travels well. Available in sizes from 90 L, the Dart suits prone, wing and small-wave SUP foiling. The 7‘0” x 18.5” 90 L starts at €1,798.
AXIS Mako Downwind – built for open-water downwind runs
The Mako Downwind is a specialist tool. Developed on Maui’s Maliko run through countless testing iterations, it is built to be the most user-friendly high-performance downwind SUP available. A revolutionary rocker line increases board speed for earlier lift in marginal conditions, and the 8’8” x 17.5” outline at 130 L provides the paddling efficiency you need to catch ocean swells. This is not a crossover board – if downwind is your discipline, the Mako is your board. From €2,049.
AXIS Hybrid Carbon – one board for everything downwind-adjacent
Not ready to commit to a dedicated downwind board? The Hybrid Carbon is AXIS’s crossover answer – EPS core with full carbon laminate and PVC sandwich on the deck, light enough for optimised performance but versatile enough for light-wind winging, SUP foiling, downwind and parawing. High-density foam around the mast tracks adds durability where it counts. The 130 L 6’6” is the most popular starting point. From €1,763.
AXIS Pump and Dock boards – minimum weight, maximum laps
The Pump and Dock boards are built around one goal: get airborne as fast as possible from flat water, then stay there as long as possible. Ultra-light construction, compact outline and a reinforced mast box area. These are not beginner boards – you need an established pump technique to get value from them. Pair with the PNG v2 or Fireball front wing and a Speed or Pump rear wing for maximum efficiency.
