What does a rear wing actually do?

The rear wing (stabiliser) controls two things: pitch and drag. A larger rear wing creates more downward lift at the tail, which makes the foil pitch up more easily – great for early lift, pump efficiency and beginners who need a forgiving ride. A smaller rear wing does the opposite: less pitch control, more direct feel, less drag and more top-end speed. Span and chord both matter. A wide, flat rear wing (like the AXIS Freeride series) maximises stability. A narrow, thin rear wing (like the AXIS Skinny or Speed series) minimises drag and rewards precise footwork.

• Freeride – the all-round series. Balanced lift, forgiving pitch, suits wing foiling, surf and progression riding at every level.
• Progressive – a step toward performance. More responsive than Freeride, still manageable, good for intermediate riders moving up.
• Skinny – narrow chord, reduced drag. Noticeably faster and glidier than Freeride; rewards body position and rail pressure.

• Pump – optimised for flat-water pump efficiency and dock starts. Works best with PNG and high-glide front wings.

Why the 440 Freeride is the benchmark rear wing

The AXIS 440 Freeride Carbon Rear Wing sits at the centre of the range – not the biggest, not the smallest. At 440 mm wingspan with a 90 mm chord and a 6.37 aspect ratio, it generates enough lift for reliable pitch without killing top-end speed. AXIS describes it as “the all-round rear wing that does everything well” – and that is accurate. It sits looser and more playful than the 500 Freeride (the bigger, more stable option) while remaining predictable enough for anyone past the pure beginner stage.

Which fuselage does the 440 Freeride fit?

The 440 uses M6 x 25mm screws (front and rear) and is compatible with the Standard, Short and ULTRA Short Red fuselages from our fuselage range. A shorter fuselage combined with the 440 gives a quicker-turning, looser setup – popular for wing foiling in confined spaces or small, punchy surf. A longer fuselage adds pitch stability and suits bigger swell and longer pump runs.

How to choose between the 400, 440 and 500 Freeride

All three use the same 90 mm chord and screw spec. The difference is wingspan and area:

• 400 Freeride – less area, looser, quicker turning. Better for lighter riders or those on smaller front wings who want a direct feel.
• 440 Freeride – the balanced middle ground. Most versatile across front wing sizes from ~700 cm² to ~1400 cm².
• 500 Freeride / 500 Anhedral – maximum stability and lift. Ideal for beginners, heavier riders, and large front wings above 1200 cm².

When to upgrade from Freeride to Skinny or Speed

Once you are riding comfortably and starting to chase more glide, speed or pump efficiency, the Freeride series starts to feel like the limiting factor. The wider chord creates drag that the Skinny and Speed series eliminate. As a rule of thumb: if you are linking waves without touching down and your front wing already feels fast, try the Skinny series at the same span as your current Freeride. If you are specifically focused on downwind runs or pump laps, go straight to the Speed series.

A simple starting framework – adjust based on your discipline and style:

• Under 65 kg: 370–400 Freeride or 380 Skinny
• 65–85 kg: 400–440 Freeride or 420 Skinny/Speed
• 85–100 kg+: 440–500 Freeride or 460 Skinny
